God Is Good


“For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.” Psalm 100:5


Scripture Focus: Psalm 145:1-21


Think of God’s goodness as we turn to what are considered the moral attributes of God, attributes which we ourselves are capable of displaying to some degree. As with all of the moral attributes, we naturally have an idea of what goodness is because we are God’s creation. But do you remember that Jesus said no one is good—except God alone (Mark 10:18)? This tells us that it is not just that God has more goodness than we have, but that His goodness is distinctively perfect and above us (Isaiah 55:8-9). It also says we are all sinners; “There is no one who does good, not even one” (Romans 3:12).


Psalm 145 beautifully proclaims to us that we don’t need to be good for God to be good to us! He “is gracious and compassionate” (vs. 8). “The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made” (vs. 9). Indeed, we see the climax of both His moral goodness in righteously dealing with sin and His goodness to us in grace in the death of Jesus. There “righteousness and peace kiss each other” (Psalm 85:10).


Insight: The Lord is good and His love endures forever.
