Omnipotence, Pt. 1

“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth… not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else.” Acts 17:24-25

Scripture Focus: Genesis 1:26-31

I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase “absolute power corrupts absolutely.” It expresses the belief that as a person’s power increases, his/her moral sense diminishes. No doubt there is much truth to that in our world today. Most of us are skeptical of anyone holding too much power especially political power.

But there is One who alone is all-powerful— completely sovereign over all things—and will never be corrupt in any way: God! His omnipotence is another attribute that you and I do not share. If ever you feel uncomfortable with this attribute, it’s probably because it breaks down your own sense of power, confirming that you are not the one in control of your life.

Genesis 1 teaches us that being made in God’s image means we are also given dominion as a reflection of His sovereignty (vs. 26). It’s not that He must give up some control to us; His sovereignty is not in conflict with our freedom. The sovereignty of our Creator is the source of our freedom. “For in him we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28), reflecting His sovereignty in a small way.

Insight: “For in him we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28).
