God’s Wrath Against Sin
“God is a righteous judge, a God who expresses his wrath every day.” Psalm 7:11
Scripture Focus: Romans 1:18-32
This attribute about God no doubt makes us all a little uncomfortable. Perhaps it feels to you like we’ve worked through the comforting characteristics of the Lord only to be “baited and switched” now at the end. But this is the time to remember that all of His other attributes show us what to make of His wrath. That is, God’s wrath is not an outburst of sinful anger like yours or mine would be. Rather, it comes out of His perfect love, goodness, and righteousness.
Paul writes that the wrath of God is “against all the godlessness and wickedness of men” (Romans 1:18). His anger is revealed purely against anything that does not reflect His goodness: “envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice… gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful” (vs. 29-30).
Thankfully, Paul tells us later of “the redemption that came by Christ Jesus” (vs. 24) whom God put forward “as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood” (vs. 25). Because of that astounding sacrifice, God’s wrath is turned away from you and me.
Insight: God is merciful and compassionate, and slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. (Psalm 103:8)
