The Spirit’s Rest

“[Christ] hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.” 1 Corinthians 15:24-25

Scripture Focus: Zechariah 6:1-8

If visions in prophecy are difficult to interpret, often so is the language. Is the “spirit” of the Holy Spirit in this passage from Zechariah? Or is it the Lord’s disposition or emotions? And does “rest” mean peace after war, or simply to remain?

The differences are compatible, though. The Holy Spirit has the same “emotions” as God the Father, and where the Spirit remains there is peace. So both interpretations can apply to the same lesson. The Lord and His Spirit are at work on a cosmic scale, dealing with sin and injustice at all points of the compass. His agenda includes the rise and fall of nations and is an all-out, full-scale war against sin and death. He will not rest until there is peace.

In God’s global war against sin to bring about our salvation, He conquers rival kings and will not share His glory. But He does share His love, calling us royal sons and daughters. We are princes and princesses of the forever King. The ultimate peace He brings includes us and is ours in Christ, by His Spirit.

Insight: And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Phil 4:7
