Operation Ice Cream
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline." Proverbs 1:7
Scripture Focus: Psalm 119:1-48
It is said that at any camp, there are plenty of shenanigans that occur when no campers are present. On their last night, a group of staff guys decided to hike the loop around camp shirtless and shoeless. They would never let the kids do this. But "Operation Ice Cream" was meant to be a fun disregard of the rules since being sent home wasn't a threat to them. However, in the middle of the hike, one of them saw a huge bison blocking their path. It was a steep hike to go back, too treacherous in the dark, and even more dangerous to approach an adult male bison.
Suddenly, this nighttime hike without provision didn't seem so wise. God gave us rules out of love. Often, when we decide we know a better way, we end up regretting our disregard for His laws. Ignoring the wisdom of the Bible means reaping the consequences of our choices; just as my friend and my buddies did on that hike. God kept them safe from any serious harm beyond a few stinging cockleburs. With no protective clothing, they bushwhacked their way around the bison and learned a good lesson that night.
Insight: Often God allows us to learn life lessons the hard way. But He is also faithful to seek out His lost sheep who stray too far.
