Can’t Handle Silence

“Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few.” Ecclesiastes 5:2

Scripture Focus: Ecclesiastes 5:1-7

The runner with her earbuds. The gamer playing Fortnite. The gathering of people who pull out their smartphones as soon as there is a moment of silence. The troubled couple who while away their nights binge-watching Netflix. The theology student who fills every spare moment with his favorite theological podcast.

You might be one of the people described, simply seeking diversion somehow. We often turn to distractions to redirect us from the thinking and feeling that come with silence. It’s how we hold the hard things of life at bay.

Has it been a while since you spent time in silence, allowing yourself to think and feel, uninterrupted? When have you conversed with the Lord without immediately punching in a passcode or turning up the volume? Silence can be scary, but it is there that God often speaks. He spoke and created the world. He speaks with the same power today to draw you lovingly to Himself, creating new life in the sinner. In His presence stillness is welcomed, and distractions are no longer needed.

Insight: Let your words be few. Your Savior fell silent for three days, and now He bids you to come and listen.

It is our hopes and prayers that these devotions will bring people to Jesus as Savior and have a deeper meaningful relationship with the Lord.
