Humility Brings Peace

"But in your great mercy you did not put an end to them or abandon them, for you are a gracious and merciful God." Nehemiah 9:31

Scripture Focus: Palms 51:1-10

David's life  story contains  chapters of victory and joy, and chapters of rebellion, struggle, and grief. When confronted with his sin, he did not make excuses, but confessed his wrongdoing while seeking purification. "Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow" (Psalm 51:7). Hyssop was the plant used as a paintbrush to apply blood from the slaughtered, sacrificial lambs to the Israelites' doorframes during the first Passover, sparing them from death. David's reference to it here indicates he knows his sin warrants death, yet  the blood of His merciful God has washed over him.

Being made into the likeness of  Jesus is what our life stories are all about. Even when  we stray from or rebel against Him, the Lord is not diverted from His plan. David's life was far from perfect, yet he was humble and teachable. He also honored and cherished God's Word as holy and infallible, the very breath of life for his soul.

God's peace grows in hearts that are not too proud to be taught new lessons.

Insight: "This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word." (Isaiah 66:2b)
