God Is Love,
“Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13
Scripture Focus: Psalm 136:1-26
“I love you” is a powerful phrase. It binds people together in relationships. Parents melt when they hear it from their young children for the first time. Lovers establish new intimacy. Long-time friends experience deeper connections. “I love you” is powerful not only because it is what we at our most basic level long to hear, but because it spurs on love when mixed with corresponding actions.
Our text powerfully connects God’s love to His acts of creation and redemption. This helpfully shows us that love is not just an abstract force, but also a deep commitment that seeks out and embraces its beloved. God’s love is also powerful because it is sure and certain for anyone who rests in Jesus. Because God’s love is connected with acts in history for the redemption of His people, it is a concrete power that rescues us from sin and ruin. Indeed, He “remembered us in our low estate,” and we can be sure “His love endures forever” (Psalm 136:23).
If God loves you even in your low estate, He therefore loves you always.
Insight: Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13)
